We have copies of Davey Willilams illustrated expose on life Which Came First; The Fried Chicken or the Fried Egg? In addition to being an electrifying improv guitarist (packs shows in NYC), Davey is quite the quirky artist as well. I caught Davey a couple of weeks ago at a performance at Bare Hands Gallery. It’s an experience to be sought after. So is the book. The first edition printing was limited to 1,000 copies. We have a few so get ‘em while they’re still around. Price is $20 unless you mention this blog ($15 in that case).

“It was in books that I encountered the universe: assimilated, classified, labeled, pondered, still formidable; and I confused the disorder of my bookish experiences with the random course of real events. From that came the idealism which it took me thirty years to shake off.”

Peter Wilm’s opening this Saturday has inspired a variety of creative mods to the upstairs space at GB. A “curtain” made from 4 foot by 20 foot lengths of cheap-ass white fabric from WalMart (the greeter asked me what I was going to make when I left) fastened lengthwise with safety pins is about 73.2% complete. The suspended windows are in place with Peter’s art framed within individual panes. Craig Legg’s Day of the Dead sculptures and crosses and such line the walls. The wooden floors beam with ancient oil stains, faded paint streaks, and compacted grime. 18-foot brick walls constantly exhaling dust hold up massive beams that texture the ceiling. I have one more curtain to hang between the exhibit and the wall-sized window that’s glazed with at least 50 years of fossilized rain and atmospheric residues. All in all, it’s the perfect setting for Peter Wilm’s funky, surreal Sharpie illustrations.
- 7 p.m., Saturday, May 3. 105 Richard Arrington Blvd. South.
- Direct flights available from Las Vegas, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur.
